Check the model and the size
Look under the fountain for the model name, then hold a ruler to the old cartridge. Filters that are a few millimetres off leave a gap where water bypasses the carbon.
Count your pets
One cat: a new filter every two weeks, a 20-pack lasts about nine months. Two or three pets, or a dog: weekly to ten days.
Hard water
Resin in the filter softens tap water; in hard-water areas it saturates sooner and white scale appears on the pump — a sign to change earlier.
Keep the pump sponge
The sponge at the pump intake is what protects the motor. Every pack holds one per filter, so it gets changed together with the filter.
